BXR Pale Ale: Where Bold Meets Balance

Inspired by bold American hops and brewed with Aussie balance in mind, BXR Pale Ale is smooth, structured, and seriously drinkable. Head Brewer Abby shares the story behind our Core Range Pale — from hop selection to the subtle touches that make it a fridge essential.

The Beer That Had to Be in the Core

For Abby, brewing a Core Range Pale Ale was never going to be just ticking a box. It had to feel right, and drink even better.

“When I first fell in love with beer, it was over in the States. I remember drinking those big, bold, hop-forward American pale ales (even if it was just for pre’s). They were bursting with flavour, packed with character, and just seriously exciting to drink.”

That early love of flavour-forward brews shaped what would become BXR Pale Ale: a smooth, balanced, yet hop-driven beer with broad appeal.

“It was those American pale ales that hooked me; the flavour, the energy, the hops. So, when it came to creating a Pale Ale for Boxer, I knew I just wanted that energy and vibe. Our Core Pale Ale brings that. It’s a modernised take on an American style but brewed with Aussie drinkers in mind.”

Building Balance

Bold hops may have been the inspiration, but balance is what makes BXR Pale Ale a true fridge essential.

“It’s important to me to brew a beer that’s well balanced. I’ve kept the bitterness in check so it’s smooth and approachable, while giving those hop characters the space to shine. There’s also a small addition of oats in the malt bill, which brings a soft, rounded feel that helps carry those flavours through. It’s a subtle touch, but it makes a difference. It brings a smooth, slightly creamy feel, and it’s just really unreal to drink.”

The hop profile is built on three American classics: Centennial in the whirlpool, then a dry hop of Centennial, Mosaic, and Chinook.

“That combo gives us grapefruit, mango, citrus peel, and that unmistakable piney edge I’ve always loved in the style.”

A Notch Above the Norm

To give the beer extra body and weight, Abby lifted the ABV to 5.0% — a little higher than the typical Aussie pale.

“It really helps support the hop profile and gives the beer more presence without going overboard.”

It’s those small choices — the extra weight from the oats, the slight lift in alcohol — that help this beer stand out while still feeling familiar.

The Result? A Pale Ale You Come Back To

BXR Pale Ale is designed to be your fridge staple: reliable, tasty, and always satisfying. Whether you’re already a pale ale lover or just after something that delivers hop character without going overboard, this one’s built for repeat visits.

“It’s got that big American hop character I fell for all those years ago, but it’s brewed with an Aussie sense of balance and drinkability. Honestly, it’s such a go-to staple which I think is a must for your fridge. It's just seriously enjoyable to drink.”
